How do I explain pet illness or death to my child?

Be honest and direct: 'Max was very sick, and the vet couldn't make him better. He died today.' Avoid euphemisms like 'put to sleep' or 'went away,' which can confuse younger children. Allow your child to grieve — crying, anger, withdrawal, and guilt are all normal responses. Create a memorial ritual (planting a flower, making a photo album) to honor the pet's memory. Pet loss can be a child's first experience with death and an opportunity to build coping skills. Consult your pediatrician if grief is prolonged or severe.
