How much allowance should I give, and should it be tied to chores?

A common guideline is $0.50 to $1.00 per year of age per week, but the amount matters less than the lessons it teaches. Some families tie allowance to chores (earning money), while others give a base allowance (learning to manage money) with extra pay for above-and-beyond tasks. Help your child divide money into 'save,' 'spend,' and 'give' categories. The key is consistency and conversation about choices. Your pediatrician can recommend age-appropriate developmental expectations.
