What art supplies are safe for toddlers, and how do I manage the mess?

Choose non-toxic, washable supplies: chunky crayons, finger paints, play dough, large chalk, and water-based markers. Designate a 'creative zone' with a washable mat or old tablecloth, and dress your toddler in old clothes or a smock. Process over product — at this age, the sensory experience of squishing, smearing, and scribbling IS the art, not the result. Avoid glitter and small beads (choking hazards). Supervise all art activities. Discuss fine motor development milestones with your pediatrician.
