How much risk should I allow my toddler at the playground?

Children under 2 often overestimate their abilities, so stay close and spot them during climbing and height activities. From age 3 onward, children develop more realistic self-assessment and can be given increasing freedom. The NAEYC recommends resisting the urge to intervene too quickly — let them test their limits, wobble, and even experience minor bumps. Say 'I see you climbing high — do you feel safe?' instead of 'Be careful!' which doesn't teach risk assessment. Discuss age-appropriate physical milestones with your pediatrician.
