How do I handle my toddler who keeps getting out of bed and stalling at bedtime?

Bedtime stalling is one of the most common toddler sleep issues: one more story, one more drink, one more hug, one more bathroom trip. This is developmentally normal — toddlers are asserting autonomy and experiencing separation anxiety. Establish a consistent, predictable bedtime routine (15–30 minutes: bath, pajamas, teeth, 2 stories, 1 song, lights out). Use a visual chart so they know what comes next. Offer controlled choices within the routine: 'Do you want the blue or green pajamas?' Use a toddler alarm clock that changes color when it's time to get up. For the child who keeps leaving the room: calmly, silently walk them back to bed every time — no engagement, no lectures, no extra hugs. This may take 20+ returns the first night but usually improves within 3–5 days. Consult your pediatrician if sleep difficulties are severe or your child seems excessively anxious at bedtime.
