Should my teenager get a part-time job, and what are the benefits and risks?

Research shows that moderate part-time work (under 15–20 hours per week) during high school has positive effects: teens learn time management, financial responsibility, and workplace skills. However, excessive work hours correlate with lower grades, increased stress, and less sleep. Look for jobs that build relevant skills or align with their interests. Help them set up a simple budget: a portion for spending, saving, and a long-term goal (car, college, travel). Use their paycheck as a teaching tool for understanding taxes and deductions. If grades drop or they seem chronically exhausted, it may be time to reduce hours. Consult your pediatrician if your teen's work schedule is affecting their sleep or mental health.
