Why does my baby cry so much in the evening, and what can I do?

Evening fussiness, sometimes called the 'witching hour,' is extremely common in babies aged 2 weeks to 3–4 months and typically peaks around 6 weeks. It's likely caused by sensory overload from the day, immature nervous system, and possibly gas or colic. Try the 5 S's: Swaddling, Side/Stomach position (while held), Shushing, Swinging, and Sucking. A warm bath, dim lights, and skin-to-skin contact also help. It will pass — most babies outgrow this phase by 3–4 months. Consult your pediatrician if crying is inconsolable, lasts more than 3 hours daily, or is accompanied by fever.
