How do I encourage social engagement in my baby?
Between 6–12 months, babies develop joint attention (following your gaze), play peek-a-boo, imitate facial expressions, and respond to social games like pat-a-cake. Encourage these by getting face-to-face during play, exaggerating your expressions, and narrating what you're both looking at: 'You see the dog! Woof woof!' Babies at this age may also show empathy by crying when they hear another baby cry. These interactions are building blocks for all future social relationships. Discuss social development milestones with your pediatrician.
