What should I know about nursery air quality and safe materials for my newborn?

Newborns spend up to 16 hours a day sleeping, so nursery air quality matters greatly. Choose a crib mattress with CertiPUR-US or GREENGUARD Gold certification to minimize off-gassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Allow new furniture to air out for several days before the baby arrives. Use low-VOC paint and wash all new bedding before use. Avoid scented candles, incense, or plug-in air fresheners in the nursery. An air purifier with a HEPA filter can help, especially in areas with poor outdoor air quality. Discuss any environmental concerns with your pediatrician.
