Should I keep pets away from my newborn, and how do I manage hygiene?

You do not need to rehome pets when a baby arrives, but some precautions are important. Keep pets out of the sleeping area to reduce suffocation and allergy risks. Wash your hands after handling pets and before touching the baby. Keep litter boxes away from baby areas and ensure someone other than a pregnant or postpartum person cleans them (to avoid toxoplasmosis). Trim pet nails to prevent accidental scratches. Interestingly, research suggests early pet exposure may reduce a child's risk of developing allergies later. Discuss your specific pet situation with your pediatrician.
