How does pet ownership benefit my school-age child's development?

Research shows that children who grow up with pets often develop stronger empathy, responsibility, and emotional regulation. Caring for an animal teaches daily routine and accountability. Pets can reduce stress and loneliness, and children often confide in pets when they won't talk to adults. Assign age-appropriate pet care tasks: feeding, brushing, walking (with supervision), and cleaning habitats. Use pet care to teach budgeting by having your child help track food and supply costs. If your child is anxious or struggling socially, a pet relationship can be therapeutic. Consult your pediatrician about any allergy concerns before getting a new pet.
