📚 School Age · 6–12 years 🏕️ Risky Play & Outdoor Adventure

My child wants to walk or bike to school alone — when is this appropriate?

Independent mobility is one of the most beneficial forms of risky play for school-age children, building confidence, navigation skills, and physical fitness. Readiness depends on the child (maturity, traffic awareness, route complexity) and the environment (distance, road crossings, neighborhood safety). Most children are ready for short, familiar routes by age 8–10 with practice. Start by walking the route together multiple times, practicing road crossings, and identifying safe places to go if they need help. Consider a buddy system with a neighbor's child. Check local laws — some areas have specific rules about unaccompanied minors. The benefits of independent mobility for development and mental health are well-documented. Discuss any concerns with your pediatrician.
