Is melatonin safe for my school-age child who struggles to fall asleep?

Good sleep hygiene alone eliminates insomnia in 50% of cases where melatonin is considered, so try behavioral strategies first: consistent bedtime/wake time, no screens 1 hour before bed, dark and cool room, and a calming routine. If these aren't enough, talk to your pediatrician before trying melatonin — it should never be used without medical guidance. Current research shows melatonin is generally safe short-term in children, but long-term safety data is limited. Your pediatrician should rule out other causes (anxiety, sleep apnea) before recommending any sleep aid.
