How do I handle tantrums with empathy?

Tantrums are a normal part of toddler development — they signal that your child's emotions are bigger than their ability to express them. Stay calm, get to their level, and name the emotion: 'You're really frustrated that we have to leave the park.' Avoid reasoning during the peak of a tantrum; wait until they're calm to discuss what happened. If tantrums are frequent, severe, or accompanied by self-harm, consult your pediatrician.
