How do I support a teen with social anxiety or performance anxiety?

Social anxiety goes beyond normal shyness — it involves intense fear of judgment, avoidance of social situations, and physical symptoms (racing heart, nausea, sweating) before social events. Acknowledge their experience without minimizing it: 'I can see this is really hard for you.' Encourage gradual exposure to feared situations rather than avoidance, which reinforces anxiety. Mindfulness and breathing techniques can help manage acute symptoms. CBT is the most effective treatment for teen anxiety disorders. Consult your pediatrician — social anxiety is highly treatable with the right support.
