How do I help my child who is terrified of the dark or has frequent nightmares?

Fear of the dark is peak-common between ages 3–6, when imagination is strong but reality-testing is weak. Use a warm night light, create a comforting bedtime routine, and avoid scary content (TV, stories) in the hour before bed. For nightmares, go to your child quickly, reassure them they're safe, and help them return to sleep. Night terrors (screaming while still asleep, usually in the first half of the night) are different — don't try to wake them; just keep them safe. Consult your pediatrician if nightmares are frequent or night terrors persist.
