What self-help skills can I encourage in my infant to build early independence?
Even babies can begin developing independence through small self-help skills. Around 6–8 months, let them hold their own bottle or sippy cup (supervised) and practice picking up finger foods. By 9–12 months, encourage self-feeding with a spoon (expect mess — it's part of learning). Let them pull off socks and hats, and hand them a washcloth during bath time. Give them choices between two toys or two foods. Resist the urge to do everything for them — the goal is 'help me do it myself.' These early skills build the neural pathways for self-regulation and confidence. Consult your pediatrician about age-appropriate developmental milestones for self-care.
