My newborn startles at every noise and seems extra jumpy — is this normal?

The Moro (startle) reflex is one of the strongest and most visible newborn reflexes, and it is completely normal. When startled by a sudden noise, movement, or sensation of falling, newborns throw their arms out, arch their back, and may cry. This reflex typically fades by 3–4 months as the nervous system matures. Some babies are more sensitive than others, which is a temperament trait, not a sign of anxiety. To reduce unnecessary startles: support the head when moving the baby, lower them slowly into the crib, and use swaddling (arms in) which can dampen the reflex and improve sleep. White noise can also mask sudden sounds. If the reflex persists strongly past 5–6 months or is asymmetric (one side only), mention it to your pediatrician.
