How do I teach my preschooler about 'private parts' and safe vs. unsafe touch?
Use correct anatomical names (penis, vulva, buttocks, chest) — research shows children who know proper terms are better equipped to report abuse. Teach the swimsuit rule: 'The areas covered by your swimsuit are private. No one should touch or look at them except a caregiver during bath time or a doctor during an exam with a parent present.' Practice simple scripts: 'Say NO, RUN AWAY, TELL A GROWN-UP.' Reinforce regularly — once is not enough. Discuss body safety approaches with your pediatrician.
