📚 School Age · 6–12 years 🌍 Cultural Identity & Diversity

How do I help my child feel proud of their heritage when they want to 'fit in' with peers?

It is very common for school-age children in multicultural families to go through a phase of wanting to hide cultural differences — refusing home-language food in their lunchbox, asking parents not to speak their language at school, or rejecting traditional clothing. This is a normal developmental response to peer pressure, not a rejection of their identity. Avoid shaming them for it. Instead, find ways to make cultural heritage feel cool and relevant: cook traditional foods together, share stories of successful people from their background, and connect them with peers who share their heritage. Schools with multicultural events can help normalize diversity. Most children circle back to cultural pride in adolescence. Consult your pediatrician if your child shows signs of persistent shame or social withdrawal.
