My child hates reading — how do I change that?

The single most impactful strategy is letting your child choose their own books — autonomy is often the missing ingredient. Graphic novels are a powerful gateway for reluctant readers, offering visual support and instant engagement. Don't dismiss comic books, joke books, or magazines — any reading counts. Read aloud together even beyond the early years, as it models fluency and builds shared enjoyment. Tie reading to their interests: a sports fan might love athlete biographies. Never use reading as punishment. Consult your pediatrician if reading avoidance may signal a learning difficulty like dyslexia.
