How do I spot signs of an eating disorder in my teen?

Warning signs include skipping meals, extreme food restriction or bingeing, excessive exercise, frequent body-checking in mirrors, wearing baggy clothes to hide their body, disappearing to the bathroom after meals, rapid weight changes, and withdrawal from social eating. Body image in teens is most impacted by their same-sex parent, so model healthy attitudes. Social media amplifies unrealistic standards — discuss media literacy. Early intervention is critical. Contact your pediatrician immediately if you suspect disordered eating — effective treatment exists.
