How do I talk to my child about the unrealistic body images they see in media and advertising?

Media literacy is one of the most protective factors against poor body image. Start by watching TV, scrolling social media, or flipping through magazines together and asking questions: 'Do you think that person really looks like that? What might have been changed?' Teach them about photo editing, filters, and strategic posing. Explain that advertisers make people feel bad about their bodies so they will buy products. Point out the diversity of real bodies in your community versus the narrow range shown in media. Praise effort, character, and skills rather than appearance. Research shows children who can critically analyze media messages about bodies have better self-esteem. Consult your pediatrician if your child expresses persistent dissatisfaction with their body.
