How do I find LGBTQ+-affirming healthcare and mental health support for my teen?

Finding affirming providers is important because LGBTQ+ youth who receive supportive healthcare have significantly better mental health outcomes. Ask potential providers directly: 'What is your experience working with LGBTQ+ youth?' Look for practices that display inclusive signage, use intake forms with inclusive language, and have staff trained in LGBTQ+ health. Organizations like PFLAG and the Trevor Project maintain provider directories. For mental health support, look for therapists trained in affirmative therapy (not conversion therapy, which is harmful and condemned by every major medical association). School GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) clubs can provide peer support. Your pediatrician can help coordinate referrals and should be an affirming resource — if they are not, consider switching providers.
