How do I bond with an adopted newborn?
Bonding with an adopted newborn follows the same principles as biological bonding: skin-to-skin contact, responsive feeding, eye contact, gentle touch, and consistent caregiving. If possible, be present at birth or as soon after placement as possible. Bonding may feel different or slower — this is normal and doesn't mean something is wrong. Some adoptive parents experience post-adoption depression similar to postpartum depression. Discuss attachment concerns and your emotional well-being with your pediatrician.
