How do I help my adopted child handle questions or insensitive comments from peers?

Role-play responses at home so your child feels prepared: 'I was adopted — that's how I joined my family' is simple and sufficient. Teach that they don't owe anyone their full story: 'That's private, but thanks for asking.' Alert teachers to be sensitive during family tree projects or assignments about 'where you came from.' Validate your child's feelings if comments hurt. Connect with other adoptive families so your child sees their experience reflected. Consult your pediatrician or an adoption-competent therapist if identity questions cause distress.
