How does early-life trauma or institutional care affect my adopted infant's development?

Infants who experienced neglect, multiple caregiver changes, or institutional care may show attachment difficulties: avoiding eye contact, not reaching for comfort, feeding issues, or developmental delays. These are normal responses to early adversity, not permanent limitations. Responsive, consistent caregiving is the most powerful intervention — your attentive presence literally rewires their developing brain. Some infants catch up quickly; others need ongoing support. Discuss your baby's specific background and developmental screening schedule with your pediatrician.
