How do my early choices about my baby's environment shape their understanding of gender and identity?

From birth, babies absorb cues about gender from their environment: colors, clothing, toys offered, and how adults speak to them (research shows adults use more emotional language with girls and more action language with boys). If you want to foster an open, expansive understanding of identity, consider diversifying the cues: offer a range of colors, choose books with varied characters, and be mindful of the adjectives you use ('strong' and 'gentle' for all babies). This does not mean raising a 'gender-neutral' baby unless you choose to — it simply means giving your child a wider palette to draw from as they develop their own sense of self. The early environment is just one factor; children's identity development is complex and ongoing. Discuss any questions about your baby's development with your pediatrician.
