How do I prepare my child with food allergies for their first birthday party or social event?

Social events are one of the biggest anxiety triggers for allergy parents. Preparation is key. Contact the host in advance: explain the allergy, ask about the menu, and offer to bring safe alternatives so your child is not left out. Pack a 'safe party kit' with a cupcake or treat that looks similar to what others are eating. Make sure your child's epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) goes everywhere they go, and that at least one other adult at the event knows how to use it. Teach your preschooler the basics: 'Don't eat anything unless Mommy/Daddy says it's safe' and 'Always ask a grown-up.' Avoid making them feel 'different' — frame it as 'Your body has a special rule about certain foods.' Consult your allergist about creating an allergy action plan to share with event hosts and caregivers.
