My child lies about things. Is this a problem?

Lying actually emerges as a cognitive milestone around age 3–4—it shows your child understands that others have different thoughts. Don't overreact; instead encourage honesty by making it safe to tell the truth. Say 'I know that's not what happened. Let's try again and tell the true story' rather than punishing the lie harshly.
