Why does my preschooler suddenly have imaginary friends — is this normal?

Imaginary friends are not only normal but are a sign of healthy cognitive development — they indicate strong imagination, language skills, and emotional processing. Up to 65% of children have had an imaginary friend by age 7. Children use imaginary friends to practice social interactions, process emotions, cope with loneliness, and work through fears. Don't worry unless the child cannot distinguish imagination from reality, uses the friend to avoid all real relationships, or blames them constantly for misbehavior. Discuss any concerns with your pediatrician.
