My preschooler is making comments about body size — theirs or others'. How should I respond?

Preschoolers are categorizers — they naturally notice and comment on differences in body size, skin color, and physical features without the social judgments adults attach. When your child says 'That person is fat' or 'My tummy is big,' stay calm and neutral. Validate observation without attaching value: 'Yes, bodies come in all different shapes and sizes, and that's normal.' Avoid shushing, which teaches that bodies are shameful topics. Never use words like 'fat' or 'skinny' as judgments at home. Focus on what bodies can DO rather than how they look: 'Your legs are strong for jumping!' Examine your own language — children absorb how you talk about your body. Consult your pediatrician if your child shows unusual preoccupation with food or body size for their age.
