How do I talk to my child about healthy eating without creating food anxiety?

The language you use around food shapes your child's relationship with eating for life. Avoid labeling foods as 'good' or 'bad,' 'healthy' or 'junk' — instead, use 'everyday foods' and 'sometimes foods.' Focus on how food makes them feel (energy for sports, focus for school) rather than weight or appearance. Never comment on your child's body or eating quantities, and be mindful of how you talk about your own body and diet in front of them. Teach nutrition as a positive skill (reading labels, understanding macronutrients, cooking) rather than a set of restrictions. Let them enjoy treats at parties and holidays without guilt. If your child begins showing anxiety around food, refusing entire food groups, or expressing body dissatisfaction, take it seriously. Consult your pediatrician or a registered dietitian for guidance tailored to your child's needs.
