When is my child old enough to stay home alone?

Most experts suggest children under 10 should not be left alone, and readiness depends on maturity, not just age. Before leaving your child alone, ensure they can handle emergencies, know how to call 911, lock and unlock doors, and follow household rules independently. Start with short trial periods and gradually increase duration. Check your state's laws on minimum age requirements, and discuss developmental readiness with your pediatrician.
