How do I help my toddler who is suddenly afraid of bath time?

A sudden fear of baths is extremely common between ages 1–3 and can be triggered by getting water in their eyes, a slip in the tub, the sensation of the drain sucking water away, or even an ear infection that makes water uncomfortable. Never force a screaming child into the bath — this reinforces the fear. Instead, try: bathing together (your calm presence helps), using a shallow amount of water, letting them play with water in a basin outside the tub, or switching to sponge baths temporarily. Give them control by letting them pour water from cups. Use bath toys to make it playful again. Most bath fears resolve within a few weeks with patient, low-pressure exposure. Consult your pediatrician if the fear is part of a broader pattern of new anxieties or if you suspect an ear issue.
