When should I start brushing my baby's teeth?
Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, typically around 6 months. Use a soft-bristled infant toothbrush with a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste. The AAP and CDC recommend seeing a dentist by your baby's first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth. Wipe gums with a clean, damp cloth after feedings even before teeth appear. Consult your pediatrician about fluoride supplementation if your water isn't fluoridated.
