What are early signs of developmental delays in newborns?

Watch for limited eye contact, lack of response to sounds, absence of social smiling by 2–3 months, and delays in motor milestones like holding their head up. By 6 months, babies should show big smiles, babble, and reach for objects. The AAP screens for developmental concerns at every well-child visit, but trust your instincts — if something feels off, bring it up with your pediatrician rather than waiting for the next scheduled appointment.
