My toddler was referred for early intervention — what does that mean?

Early intervention (EI) is a system of federally mandated services for children birth to age 3 with developmental delays or disabilities. Services may include speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or developmental support — often provided in your home at no cost. Research consistently shows that early intervention significantly improves outcomes. EI does not require a formal diagnosis. Your pediatrician or state EI program can guide you through the evaluation process.
