How does cooking with my preschooler support their overall development?

Cooking is one of the richest developmental activities for preschoolers, touching nearly every learning domain. Math: counting eggs, measuring cups, setting a timer. Science: observing how heat changes ingredients, mixing colors in smoothies. Literacy: reading recipe steps together, learning food vocabulary. Fine motor: stirring, pouring, kneading dough, decorating cookies. Executive function: following sequential steps, waiting for results. Sensory development: tasting, smelling, touching different textures. Social-emotional: pride in contributing to the family, patience, and cooperation. Give them real tasks — not just watching — and accept imperfection. A lumpy pancake they made themselves tastes better than a perfect one they didn't. Consult your pediatrician about food allergy precautions when introducing new ingredients.
