How do I handle my child's constant negotiating and arguing about everything?

School-age children are developing logical thinking and a sense of fairness, which naturally leads to more arguing and negotiating — it's actually a sign of cognitive growth. Set clear expectations: some rules are non-negotiable (safety, bedtime), while others have room for discussion (weekend activities, order of chores). Teach respectful disagreement: 'I hear your point — here's why the rule exists.' Avoid engaging in power struggles; state the rule once, give the consequence if needed, and move on. Consult your pediatrician if defiance is extreme, aggressive, or affecting family functioning.
