How do I survive a long car trip with a toddler?

The key to road trips with toddlers is managing expectations and planning frequent stops. Schedule stops every 1.5–2 hours for movement, snacks, and diaper changes. Pack a variety of car-friendly entertainment: magnetic drawing boards, sticker books, audiobooks, finger puppets, and window clings. Save screen time as a backup for the hardest stretches. Bring familiar comfort items (blanket, stuffed animal) and stick to nap schedules as much as possible. Pack double the snacks you think you need — hunger is the number one trigger for car meltdowns. Use a car seat mirror so you can see them and they can see you. Leave early in the morning or at nap time to gain peaceful driving hours. Keep a change of clothes and cleanup supplies within arm's reach. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even briefly. Consult your pediatrician about car seat safety for extended travel.
