Should I be teaching my preschooler academics, or should they just play?

Play IS learning at this age — research overwhelmingly shows that play-based learning (building blocks, pretend play, outdoor exploration, art) develops the same skills as formal instruction: problem-solving, language, math concepts, self-regulation, and creativity. You don't need flashcards or workbooks. Read together daily, count objects naturally ('Let's count the stairs!'), and follow their curiosity. The push for early academics can actually backfire by creating stress and reducing intrinsic motivation. Discuss kindergarten readiness with your pediatrician and preschool teacher.
