How do I teach my child good dental habits and make them actually brush properly?

Cavities remain the most common chronic childhood disease, affecting over half of children by age 12. Until age 6–7, children lack the fine motor skills to brush effectively alone — they need supervision and help. Use a fluoride toothpaste (pea-sized amount for ages 3+) and a soft-bristled, child-sized brush. Brush for 2 minutes twice daily, using a timer, song, or app to make it consistent. Teach the 'wiggle and roll' technique along the gumline. Flossing should begin when teeth touch. Make it routine, not negotiable: brush before breakfast and after the last food before bed. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially sticky candy and juice. Schedule dental checkups every 6 months starting at age 1. Consult your pediatrician or pediatric dentist about fluoride varnish applications and sealants for permanent molars.
